Barium Small Bowel Follow Through Protocol

SBFT Technologist Worksheet

I. Equipment (May vary between sites)

a. Thin barium (16 to 20 oz.) (a cap full of Gastrografin may be added for patients that do not have an iodine allergy)
b. SBFT Technologist Worksheet
c. F-spoon & balloon paddle
d. Lead glove

II. Personnel

a. Radiologist/RA

i. Verifies order
ii. Approves SCOUT image
iii. Takes spot images

b. Hospital Technologist

i. Prints order and relevant notes
ii. Documents patient history and pregnancy status prior to exam
iii. Responsible for patient care during exam
iv. Administers contrast
v. Follows/ documents progress using SBFT Technologist Worksheet and reviews images with radiologist/RA
vi. Must be present in the room for spot imaging (behind control panel ok)

III. Procedure (Do not begin barium SBFT exams after 12:00pm)

a. Scout image

i. Required for patients s/p endoscopy or surgical procedure (within 1 week)
ii. To be cleared by radiologist/RA
iii. Upright abdomen (on expiration, must include bilateral hemidiaphragms)

b. Contrast administered
c. Timed KUBs

IV. Special Considerations

a. Encourage patients to increase fluid intake following exam & light colored stools are normal
b. If abdominal pain or cramping occurs patients should contact PCP
