Enteroclysis PRINT

Enteroclysis Protocol

I. Equipment (May vary between sites)

a. Glucagon (1mg IV) (ordered by and at the discretion of onsight radiologist)
b. Zofran (4-8mg IV) for nausea/ vomiting (ordered by onsight radiologist)
c. Enteroclysis catheter with balloon (if unavailable use enteral feeding tube)
d. Lidocaine Gel
e. 5mL syringe
f. HurriCaine One- Benzocaine Oral Anesthetic (if available)
g. 60mL luer lock Syringe
h. Saline flush
i. Guidewire (Coons or Roadrunner) (open when needed)
j. Nasal attachment, silk tape
k. Alcohol pads
l. 3 bottles of (Volumen 450mL)
m. Long extension tubing

II. Personnel

a. Radiologist/RA

i. Responsible for administering contrast and taking spot images

b. Hospital Technologist

i. Prints order for radiologist/RA review
ii. Documents patient history and pregnancy status prior to exam
iii. Assists the radiologist or fluoroscopy technologist during procedure
iv. Provides patient and floor nurse with aftercare instructions

III. Procedure

a. Radiology nurse to administer IV Zofran prior to exam
b. Flush feeding tube with saline
c. Inject lidocaine gel in patients nare (administer HurriCaine spray PRN)
d. Cover the end of the feeding tube with lidocaine gel
e. Under fluoroscopic guidance- manipulate feeding tube through stomach and into the small intestine (preferably with tip past the ligament of treitz)
f. Secure tube to patients nose with nasal attachment or silk tape
g. Inflate balloon on enteroclysis catheter according to catheter instructions
h. Remove wire
i. Tilt table semi upright and roll patient slightly to the left using a foam wedge
j. Attach extension tubing to feeding tube
k. Inject Volumen (3 bottles) (have a 4th bottle ready)
l. CT or MRI to follow (have scout slices of TI cleared by a radiologist & inject more contrast if requested)
m. Deflate balloon on enteroclysis catheter and remove prior to scan

IV. Required Images

a. Fluoroscopy spot images of tube placement.

V. Special Considerations

a. No fluoroscopy needed for exams ordered as enterography
