Fistulagram/Abscessogram Protocol

I. Equipment (May vary between sites)

a. Contrast

i. Discuss with Radiologist prior to exam (dilution may be required if CT to follow)

b. Syringe
c. Long extension tubing
d. Catheter (examine fistula to determine catheter size)
e. Sterile 4×4 gauze

II. Personnel

a. Radiologist/RA

i. Responsible for administering contrast and taking spot images

b. Hospital Technologist

i. Prints order for radiologist/RA review
ii. Documents patient history and pregnancy status prior to exam
iii. Assists the radiologist or fluoroscopy technologist during procedure
iv. Provides patient and floor nurse with aftercare instructions

III. Procedure

a. Review patient history and contrast preference with a radiologist prior to exam
b. Scout KUB
c. Cannulate fistula with size appropriate catheter
d. Under fluoroscopic guidance gently inject contrast and capture spot images
e. Review images with a radiologist (CT may be performed subsequent to fistulography for additional characterization of the fistula)

IV. Required Images

a. Scout
b. Fluoro spot images of contrast injection
c. KUB

V. Special Considerations

a. Follow contrast allergy protocol
