I. Equipment
a. Gastrografin
b. Alternative water soluble contrast (approved by radiologist)
II. Personnel
a. Radiologist/RA
i. Responsible for administering contrast and taking spot images
b. Hospital Technologist
i. Reviews and prints order for radiologist/RA
ii. Documents patient history and pregnancy status prior to exam
iii. Checks patient allergies and schedules 13 hour prep when necessary
iv. Assists the radiologist/RA during procedure
v. Provides patient with aftercare instructions
III. Procedure (Exams will vary according to patient limitations and anatomy)
a. Scout image
i. Upright scout required for patients s/p endoscopy or surgical procedure (within 1 week) (acquired on expiration and must include bilateral hemidiaphragms)
ii. To be cleared by Radiologist/RA
b. Spot images
i. Contrast filled esophagus
ii. Contrast filled stomach
iii. Duodenum and jejunum with contrast
iv. Surgical site in different projections
v. Post procedure KUB
IV. Special Considerations
a. Follow contrast allergy protocol
b. Do not use Gastrografin for patients with elevated aspiration risk (confirm contrast changes with ordering provider)
c. If unable to confirm leak status, consider CT follow up (discuss with radiologist)
