Gastrografin Enema PRINT

Enema Single Contrast

I. Equipment (may vary between sites)

a. Contrast

i. Gastrografin (suspected perforation, post-op, recent biopsy, obstruction)

1. Therapeutic enema – Gastrografin to warm water (1:4)

2. Diagnostic enema – Gastrografin to warm water (1:3)

ii. Barium (uncooperative, limited mobility, unable tolerate double contrast enema)

1. Liquid Polibar Plus- 105% w/v (mix 400mL barium with 1600mL H2O)

b. Single contrast enema bag set up: enema tip, balloon insufflator
c. IV pole
d. Chux for table x 2 (have extra available)
e. Towels

II. Personnel

a. Radiologist/RA

i. Review order
ii. Responsible for administering contrast and taking spot images

b. Hospital Technologist

i. Prints order and relevant notes
ii. Documents patient history and pregnancy status prior to exam
iii. Assists the radiologist/RA during procedure
iv. Responsible for overhead imaging
v. Provides patient with aftercare instructions

III. Procedure

a. Scout KUB according to site protocol
b. Insert enema tip and inflate balloon
c. Contrast on with patient on left side
d. Roll patient as necessary to move contrast

IV. Required Images

a. Fluoro spot images

i. Therapeutic enema

1. Contrast filled colon

ii. Diagnostic enema

1. Contrast filled anastomosis
2. Suspicious lesions or leaks

b. Overhead images

i. AP KUB
ii. Bilateral oblique KUBs

V. Special Considerations

a. Patient prep- Ordering provider to determine appropriate bowel prep for patient
b. Rectal anastomosis- Foley catheter to replace enema tip (radiologist/ fluoroscopy technologist preference)
